CPRP certification requirements for psychiatric rehabilitation practitioners: pathways, fees, retakes

CPRP certification requirements come down to one of five eligibility pathways, each a set amount of education, psychiatric rehabilitation training hours and work hours, plus conditions every candidate meets: age 18 or older, a signed PRA Code of Ethics, and an exam taken within 90 days of approval. Most people land here unsure whether the hours they already have will count. Start with the pathway table, find your row, and the rest of the page tells you what that row costs and how long it takes.

Checked against the sources linked on this page.

The five CPRP eligibility pathways

Education decides the row; the row decides the hours.

PRA’s eligibility page sorts every applicant into one pathway by education, and the education sets how many training and work hours you still owe. Checked ; PRA publishes the table as an image, so re-check it before you apply.

Read across your row. A behavioral health degree halves the work hours of Pathway 1; a psych rehab major or minor from an approved program, or an existing PRA credential, clears both columns.

The approved programs for Pathway 4 are listed by PRA: Boston University, Drexel, Rutgers, UCLA and UMDNJ.

Conditions on every pathway

  • You are 18 or older.
  • You sign the PRA Code of Ethics; an unsigned application is denied.
  • You are not on probation or parole; felony convictions and recent misdemeanors are reviewed case by case.
  • Your work is with adults or transition-age youth from 16 up; the CFRP is PRA’s credential for children under 18.

CPRP training hours: what counts

Training means contact hours on psychiatric rehabilitation, and PRA’s training rules put three limits on them. They must fall within the 36 months before you apply, at least 22.5 hours must come from a PRA Approved Provider, and the content must address serious mental illness in the population the credential serves.

In-house sessions are the usual casualty here. Sort your certificates before you pay anything: the list below is what PRA leaves out.

Hours that do not count

  • CPR, first aid and HIPAA training.
  • Training specific to your agency’s own procedures.
  • Internships, and courses taken toward a degree.
  • Anything contrary to psych rehab principles, such as restraint, involuntary commitment or forced medication.

Work experience: settings, caps and timing

Work hours have to come from a psych rehab or recovery-oriented setting that serves adults with serious mental illness. PRA’s work-experience rules count six months full time as 1,000 hours and twelve months as 2,000, and your supervisor signs a verification form.

Unpaid, volunteer and internship hours together can make up no more than half the total. A qualifying internship is at least 400 supervised hours under a PRA-credentialed supervisor.

  • 1,000 hsix months full time
  • 2,000 htwelve months full time
  • 50%cap on unpaid, volunteer and internship hours

From application to exam day

Five steps, about a month of paperwork, then 90 days to test.

The sequence below is from the candidate handbook. Plan on four to five weeks between submitting and having a test link, then a 90-day window to use it.

  1. Apply online

The application runs on SurveyMonkey Apply. Request any ADA accommodation here; it costs nothing extra.

  2. Pay

PRA checks your membership status, then emails the payment request. Allow about a week.

  3. Commission review

About two weeks. This is where your pathway, training and work hours are checked.

  4. ProctorU invitation

Arrives within 10 business days of approval, with the link to book a time. Testing runs 24 hours a day, so there is no exam date to wait for.

  5. Sit the exam within 90 days

125 multiple-choice items in three hours, from a private room with a webcam, microphone and photo ID. Pass or fail shows at the end.

Those 90 days are a good length for practice. One domain section of the free CPRP practice test a day covers all seven in a week and tells you where the gaps are.

CPRP certification cost

Fees as of , from PRA’s Exam Dates page and the certification FAQ. All of them are non-refundable and non-transferable, and a no-show forfeits the fee.

CPRP exam fees, member and non-member, as of 23 Oct 2026
ItemPRA memberNon-member
Application, first attempt included$455$595
Each retake$230$370
Hand-scoring appeal (within 30 days)$250$250
ADA accommodationsno feeno fee

The member price is $140 lower on the application and again on each retake. The 2025 handbook lists an individual PRA membership at $125 (as of ), less than that gap. If you are paying the fee yourself, check the current membership price in PRA’s store before you apply.

Retakes and the 12-month window

If the first attempt does not go your way, PRA allows up to three retakes within 12 months of application approval, with at least 30 days between attempts. Each retake has its own fee. Once the 12 months run out, you file a new application and pay the full fee again.

A retake feels like starting over, and it is not: your approval and pathway stand for the whole 12 months. Spend the 30 days on the domains where your practice scores are lowest, not on rereading everything.

Passing score and pass rate: what PRA publishes

PRA does not publish a CPRP passing score or a pass rate. The Commission sets the standard through a modified Angoff study, where experts judge how a minimally qualified practitioner would do on each item, and the result you get is pass or fail, shown on screen when you finish.

Without a number to aim at, aim at consistency instead: steady results across all seven domains matter more than a high score in one.

Keeping the credential: recertification and reinstatement

The CPRP lasts three years and expires on December 31 of the third. To recertify you log 45 contact hours across those 36 months, with at least 22.5 from the Academy or a PRA Approved Provider and at least 4 on ethics.

The recertification fee has three tiers by filing date: early (January–March), regular (April–September) and late (October–December). Filing in the first quarter is the cheapest. A credential that lapses can be reinstated within 24 months without retesting, with the same 45 hours plus fees.

Psychosocial rehabilitation specialist roles and the CPRP

Job titles use “psychosocial” where PRA uses “psychiatric”, and the work is the same field: skill building, community integration and recovery planning with adults who have serious mental illness. If you searched for a psychosocial rehabilitation certification, the CPRP is the practitioner credential PRA issues for this work.

Some state programs name the CPRP in their staffing rules. PRA keeps a state recognition summary, though parts of it are dated, so confirm the current rule with your employer or state agency. Holding the credential is not a license to practice.

CPRP vs CPRS and peer credentials

Peer recovery credentials such as the CPRS rest on lived experience and are run by states or boards. The CPRP has no lived-experience requirement. The two meet at Pathway 2: a qualifying peer certification lowers your work hours from 2,000 to 1,500.

College certificates

An online psychosocial rehabilitation certificate is coursework, not the CPRP. Courses taken toward a degree do not count as training hours, and only a four-year degree with a psych rehab major or minor from an approved program waives the hours entirely.

Once you know your pathway

What to carry into your application

  • Find your row first: education sets the training and work hours you owe.
  • At least 22.5 training hours must come from a PRA Approved Provider, within 36 months.
  • You can test before your work hours are done and finish them within a year of passing.
  • Fees change; the figures here were checked .
  • No pass mark or pass rate is published; aim for even results across all seven domains.

Questions practitioners ask

How much does it cost to take the CPRP exam?

As of 23 Oct 2026, PRA’s Exam Dates page lists $455 for members and $595 for non-members, first attempt included; a retake is $230 or $370. PRA’s own documents have shown different figures over 2024–2025, so check the page on the day you apply.

What is the passing score for the CPRP exam?

PRA does not publish one. The Commission sets the passing standard through a modified Angoff study, and you see only pass or fail at the end of the exam. A percentage quoted elsewhere as the CPRP cut score did not come from PRA.

What is the CPRP pass rate?

There is no current published figure. Graphs in a 2017 PRA newsletter are years old, so treat any pass rate you see as unverified and judge your readiness by practice results instead.

Can I take the CPRP exam before I finish my work hours?

Yes. The 2025 candidate handbook lets you finish them after the exam, within one year of passing. The credential becomes active once every requirement is met.

Does peer support certification count toward CPRP?

It can. Pathway 2 is for people certified in peer support through a program of at least 45 hours on the blueprint domains. It asks for 45 training hours and 1,500 work hours instead of the 2,000 in Pathway 1.

What is the difference between CPRP and CPRS?

CPRS is a peer recovery specialist credential, built on lived experience of recovery and issued under rules that differ by state or board. The CPRP is a practitioner credential from PRA, open to anyone who meets one of the five pathways, with or without lived experience.

How much does a psychosocial rehabilitation specialist make?

We do not quote a figure. Pay for these roles follows the employer, the state’s funding rates and the job title, and published averages lump several titles together. Compare the salary ranges in postings near you that list the CPRP as required or preferred.

Is an online psychosocial rehabilitation certificate the same as CPRP?

No. A college certificate is coursework; the CPRP is a credential you earn by passing PRA’s exam. Only Pathway 4 turns study into eligibility: a four-year degree with a psych rehab major or minor from an approved program, and then no training or work hours are needed.
